KULA AGE GRADES

Age group or age grade: A group of boys and girls approximately of the same age or in the range of ages usually between one and two years apart. They are social organizations who grew up together as friends, playmates, and started to support each other and fellowship and formed a bond as they grow together. The groups usually organize wrestling contests by challenging those closest to them in age but older. Unlike the Western system where wrestling is organized by weight classes, these groups wrestle by age classes. In the past, these age groups perform certain tasks both in helping their mates or the community. They perform as messengers when there is death in one of the families. The group will send out boats to the fishing ports to inform relatives of one of their members about the passing of a family member. They are also responsible for the local casket for the burial of the deceased. They perform other functions such as adopting part of the town and clean it from time to time. They contribute and support their member after a baby is born or during marriages. The groups usually will select a leader whose name the group will bear for example Black, Dan, Kelsey, and others are names of age groups in Kula. They also choose a man and woman to be their patron and matron. These adults give them direction, serve as mentors, and as parental figures in their lives.
